Yoruichi Shihōin (四楓院 夜) was the former commander of the Onmitsukido and the former captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13. Marenoshin maeda was her lieutenant. Having given up control of both roles, she now assists Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi at their Urahara Shop in the Human World. Let’s talk more about Yoruichi Shihouin.

Appearance
Yoruichi Shihin is slim and attractive. Her dark hair and skin complement her golden eyes. Her bangs reach her chin and her hair is pulled back into a ponytail at the waist. She typically wears a beige ribbon around her waist, an orange overshirt with two white straps on each shoulder, black stretch pants, and lightweight brown shoes for maximum stealth and convenience when employing Shunpo.
She used to hide her identity by pulling up a beige neck warmer over her face, but now she no longer does so. She has been seen with banded beige arm and leg warmers. Yoruichi sports a miniskirt, arm warmers, and knee-high boots during the Quincy Blood War.
When she’s in cat shape, she can go undetected for much longer than any other Shinigami. She has a unique male voice and golden eyes in her guise.
Back when she was a captain 110 years ago, she wore the identical sleeveless, backless Onmitsukido costume as Su-Fang does now, down to the long black wrist guards. The only difference was a black ribbon around her neck. The long-sleeved captain’s haori was what she was dressed in. Her hair was chopped short, just like Su-is Feng’s now, minus the braids. Prior to this, she had been seen in the white Onmitsukido uniform of the punishment corps.
Personality
Yoruichi is a smart and humorous individual with a deep understanding of Soul Society and its inner workings. Despite her noble background, she behaves remarkably similarly to Kaien Shiba. She resented being addressed “Yoruichi-sama,” but instructed Su-Feng to refer to her without honorific suffixes.
She likes to tease Ichigo about his reaction to seeing her naked, therefore she has been known to change into Human form right in front of him on multiple times. She also uses an elderly person’s language, referring to herself in both her human and animal forms as “washi” rather than more feminine phrases like “watashi.” She seems to spend much of her time in her cat shape, albeit we don’t know how she got there. After spending so much time in cat form, she forgot to put on clothes before revealing to Ichigo her Shinigami form, so she could show him how she transformed. When she’s in cat shape, she sounds like a man, therefore she loves performing the transformation in front of others just to witness their reactions.
As we saw with her reaction to the damage done to her tail, her affection for her cat shape extends to strong fury if it is harmed or its look is insulted.
Although she can be serious and composed when the situation calls for it, Yoruichi is more often than not carefree and flirtatious, especially with those younger than her, such as Ichigo Kurosaki at the underground hot spring, a younger and more fiery Byakuya Kuchiki, Su-Feng before she was a captain, and Kisuke Urahara, a childhood friend, former underling, and fellow ex-captain. Yoruichi’s habit of changing into a cat is consistent with her preference for milk.
Abilities and Power
Yoruichi can transform into a black cat at will, a talent that few people have. It’s unclear how she manages to do this when no other Shinigami has done it before. Others she knew back in the early 1900s are aware of her skill because she has had it for over a century. Over a century has passed since she first took her form, suggesting that this process does not have a temporal limit for her.
Despite her physical limitations, while Yoruichi is in cat shape she is still able to channel her spiritual force and move at extraordinary speeds. Because her voice is so much deeper when she has undergone this transition, most people will mistake her for a man.
Zanpakuto
While it is well knowledge that Yoruichi, a former captain of the Gotei 13, owns a Zanpakut and has learned Bankai, she typically resorts to Hoh and Hakuda instead. Formerly a part of her wardrobe, she no longer wears the item. Like modern day Su-Fang, she kept hers sheathed horizontally behind her on her lower back, making it look like a kodachi or wakizashi.
History
Yoruichi Shihouin was born a princess of the Shihin Clan of the Tenshiheisban. Yoruichi and her pals Kisuke Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi spent their childhoods at the Shihin Mansion in the Seireitei of Soul Society. They used to hang out under Urahara’s Skyoku hill training facility and have fun together every day.
While serving as the 22nd generational Head of the Shihin Clan, Yoruichi became the first woman to ever assume the role of Corps Commander of the Executive Militia of the Onmitsukid. Later on, she would take over the role of Shihin Clan Chief, the traditional Commander-in-Chief of the Onmitsukido. She later became captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13, continuing her family’s legacy of unifying the many branches of the military.
Plot
Later on, instead of serving as the Onmitsukido’s usual Corps Commander of the Executive Militia, she switched to leading the Corrections Corps. While Yoruichi was Commander of the Onmitsukido, she took in Su-Feng as a personal bodyguard. Because of her insight into her potential, she eventually became a trusted advisor and friend. The majority of what she learned was passed on to Su-Feng. She developed a wide variety of Shunpo-based methods while a member of Soul Society, and even passed on part of her knowledge to Byakuya.
When Kirio Hikifune, the previous commander of the 12th Division, was promoted, Yoruichi suggested her Third Seat, Kisuke Urahara, for the position. This occurred around 110 years ago. Yoruichi sparred with Urahara in the Skyoku Hill training facility before informing him of the job opening. Yoruichi notified Urahara of her recommendation for the position before she went back to the 2nd Division barracks. Yoruichi’s overconfidence in Urahara’s talents worried Su-Feng, so she went to confront her and tell her why she thought it was a bad idea to make him Corps Commander of the Detention Unit. Is Yoruichi black?
As far as I can tell, she probably is. Considering the other characters are supposed to be Japanese, they wouldn’t be caucasian either, but her skin is noticeably darker than theirs. Even though both Harribel and Tousen were dark, neither of them had any obviously African features, therefore I don’t think we should expect Yoruichi to either.
Final Thoughts
