Samurai 8: Hachimaru Den in its nearly thirty chapter release has displayed a wide variety of emotions. However, chapter 29 is the point where we experience one of the most surprising turn of events in the story. The plot continues where we left off in the last chapter’s big fight between Ben and Daruma. Even though he was extremely vigorous and cut away half of Ben’s total strength, Daruma reaches the limit of its transformation. Letting unwilling Hachimaru take over the situation, Daruma releases its trainee’s key and unveils the past of Ben/Kotsuga to the samurai. Determined to learn the tragedy of his past, Kotsuga insists Hachimaru to sync up with him and grants him the permission to witness what Hachimaru was experiencing. We then observe Kotsuga’s backstory and discover of how Ben really took everything from Kotsuga. Ben controlled each and everything in Kotsuga’s existence—who was Sanda, a name given to him by his paretns—and murdered his mother, that leads to the death of his father from losing his wife/princess and being unsuccessful as a samurai.
Kotsuga was the name given to Sanda by Ben and his mind was filled with concepts like greed, lust and desire instead of the loving concepts a kid should learn when growing up. Now after regaining his lost memories, Kotsuga insists Hachimaru to forgive his wrong doings against the team and knock down Ben. Hachimaru witness the once samurai and informs him that he still possess his samurai spirit which interprets as him telling he will indeed rescue the thief! Daruma showed the past of Kotsuga to Hachimaru through his key and it was amazing. The part was the hardest to comprehend. We came to know that Kotsuga was given the name Sanda by a caring family who was brainwashed by Ben. Kotsuga was as a result of Ben’s wish to train someone from younger age to teach him the evil method of living so that Ben could have someone just like him. This is really cruel and no one can deny it.
We had anticipated that Daruma would get back to his cat form as he can’t be like that forever. But we didn’t expect him to transform back so soon. It’s now Hachimaru’s turn to beat Ben. Although Ben has lost a lot of his strength but still it’s not easy to defeat him. Will Hachimaru be able to take this challenge and avenge Kotsuga?
This chapter was epic and that describes the whole chapter. Kotsuga may have taken some evil steps to betray his companions but now that we know his past we understand his situation. Now it’s Hachimaru’s turn to give a big defeat to this cruel man and hopefully we will see think in chapter 30. What do you think about this chapter?
