Rin Tohsaka is one of the main female characters of Fate/stay night who is the Master of Archer in the Fifth Holy Grail War. She is the main character of Unlimited Blade Works route in Fate/stay night.

BACKGROUND
Two hundred years ago, the house of Tohsaka, in association with the kingdom of Makiri and Einzbern, together discovered the Fuyuki Holy Grail Wars. Rin’s ancestor Nagato Tohsaka owned the second greatest spiritual power in all of Japan, possessed within the land of Fuyuki City; at the order of Einzberns, he enabled his land to be a combat zone for future and present wars.
Nagato was a pupil of Zelretch as well as a kirishitan; these tribute gave him the fame and respect in both the Church and Mage’s Association, granting the permission for the Tohsaka house to compete in the Holy Grail Wars, free from the mockery of both the organization.
Family’s magecraft chose Rin as their heir, and was guided to prioritize magecraft for her own liking, this instruction was given to her by her father. A decade ago, Tokiomi Tohsaka was chosen to be one of the Masters and participate in the 4th Holy Grail War, and Rin was authorize to be the administrator of the Tohsaka estate until his arrival.
Leaving her mother Aoi Tohsaka in an infirm state from the war, Kirei Kotomine was given the duty to take care of her mother. Kirei Kotomine taught Rin advance magic to improve her abilities as a mage after her father’s death.
To keep her attention away from her personal life, Rin has eagerly struggled to gain attention from her associates, even after her personality has a dark side which include being secretly selfish, tomboyish and stickler. After Toiomi’s met his demise, all the rights of the Tohsaka lands where now owned by Aoi and afterwards owned by Rin on Aoi’s death.
The properties were handled by Kirei was acting as his guardian at that time, and because of his crude and reckless management, the bulk of properties which were able to yield profit winded up losing their ownership of them. It is possible that he thought the resources she owned would be bad for her upbringing due to following the laws and rules of poverty and humility.
Even though Rin hates the sacrifices she has suffered for the sake of heritage, she is seriously eager and determined to set an example of how talented and supreme sorcerer she is. It was a huge let down for her after she summons Archer and winded up with an argument with him; whatsoever, the two of them soon settled, get their thoughts together and worked as a team.

Rin is an adult woman with blue light blue eyes and back length wavy dark hair which she ties in twin-tail fashion with black ribbons. She is seen in her Homurahara uniform when she is in school and sometimes she wears a big red-coat on her uniform. Usually she is seen in a red full sleeves shirt with high neck which she pairs with black skirt and high length black socks with brown flat shoes made of leather.
As a child, she is mostly seen in a white shirt with red bow on her neck paired with red skirt and the similar black socks she wears as an adult. During the fifth Holy Grail War, she arranged a simple skirt and shirt for Saber, although it was a gift from Kirei.
As a grown up, after the Heaven’s Feel Route and the time lapse of two year, she leaves her hair untied and is seen in red shirt with long maroon skirt. Sometimes she is seen in bid red jacket, white jumper and short black skirt with boots.

RIN’s PERSONALITY
Rin is an insightful, determined and quick-witted person and ambitious person. At school she is appreciated for and regarded as a person who always abide by the rules but she has adapted that demeanor to not let anyone get too close to her. Truly she is outrageous, sharp-witted, niggardly and domineering but is not mean towards those who are close to her. She is regarded as the perfect student in the school. She often speaks in a disdainful and aggressive manner but she has a soft heart and caring nature.
A curse runs in her family due which she is likely to make insignificant mistakes at the wrong time. She is not as cold as she may seem but she makes rational choices which are mostly unfriendly as she stated once it’s ‘not a cute personality’. That personality can also be judged by the choice of her clothes.
Although she is willing to do anything, no matter how unethical and deceitful, in order to win the Holy Grail War, but deep down she is a sincere person as she rejected to get rid of Shirou although she could have done that easily. The reason behind her rejection was the fact that he had once done a favor to her and she thinks it would be too immoral to do that without paying him back. In a nutshell, Rin is an insightful, sincere, hostile, troublesome, resilient and passionate tsundere who has both good and bad qualities of a trope.
When she was a kid, she got to know the Fourth Holy Grail of War like Shirou seems to grasp the Fifth but not truly understand it. She thinks of her father as someone to be respected and liked and considers him as an incredible magus. But, what she doesn’t seem to understand is all the bad sides of his character that is an integral part of his personality. But, if he had lived long enough to let her realize it, she may won’t be able to be the person she has become herself.
It’s not assured that she would have deemed his actions wrong and gave up the journey of being magus or would have continued that path and idealize her father to become a great and inhuman magus. None of it would have led her to happiness or contentment. It was due to Tokiomi’s early death, that she couldn’t know the real cause of Holy Grail War which is to unravel a ‘hole’ beyond the world.
To honor her late father and her family’s name, Rin is determined to gain Holy Grail, although it’s not what she personally wish for. She feel ashamed for not taking much care of her sister when she was adopted by Matou. The extent of her guilt reached to the point that she saved Shirou when he nearly died just because Sakura likes him. Although Rin claims to be looking out for her sister from distant but she has no idea how painful it has been for Sakura to live in that household and thinks that Sakura will relieve her from that guilt, but it is not true.
She has fought a many time with Shirou as she has worked together with him. She is playful from inside, so she spends most of the time teasing people with firm personality. Although, there was a time when she really wanted to get rid of him as she had seen his Gradation Air in his shed and misunderstood him as a liar. Although, she has never admitted that but the Heaven’s Feel scenario showed that she has some feelings for Shirou after observing his persistent efforts to get done with high jump that was not in any way possible to achieve as they were younger.
Rin had been favorable towards Shirou’s relationship with Saber in the fate route. During Unlimited Blade Works, their mutual attraction towards each other lead to a romantic relationship. In Heaven’s Feel, Rin express her feelings towards Shirou that lead to Sakura being envious and feel hatred for her.
Rin is fond of jewels. She her family has left wealth for her, but she doesn’t feel right about depending on the wealth of her ancestors.
