Monster girls had become a trend in the world but have you ever heard of monster father? In a latest manga published by Seven Seas a mother ties knot with a unicorn
Isseki’s mother gets remarried to a unicorn-human hybrid, shocking the 16 year old boy. His name is Masaru and to make things more troublesome his mother is going for a business trip leaving Isseki with his new stepfather which is not going to be easy for him especially knowing that he is a unicorn.
The very first of Isseki with his father in the absence of his mother, he gets to witness him having hay for breakfast and is also questioned by Otogawa who is the head of the tenants community as he had heard noises that was made by Masaru when he was in his unicorn form. In addition to make his father learn to live with the humans, Isseki questions himself if Masaru can ever be the part of the human world.
The weird stories about Masaru starts spreading among the residents of the apartment complex. They begin to think he is a bizarre guy and avoid talking to him or getting close to him. Otogawa on the other hand is suspicious about both father and son as he thinks they are secretly petting an animal. She is also annoyed by Masaru for being irresponsible in the complex. But still, she is willing to help them adjust in the complex.
The manga consist of only one volume but Monaka Suzuki has done a good job in completing the whole story by the end of the manga. The ending is satisfying leaving no questions in the mind of the readers. The relationship of Isseki and Masaru developed smoothly and nothing felt rushed in the end. Although the story wasn’t much complicated that would arise many question to be concluded, but still all conflicts were resolved by the end.
The visuals are appealing and lively as they give comic relief more than the dialogues. The visuals of Masaru was also very good both as the unicorn and human or even the form when he is bit of both (as he turns his lower half into the unicorn when he gets worried).
There is not too much in the background as it is mostly empty but that is how the characters are more focused who enough to make it attractive are. The face expressions of Isseki on the silly action of Masaru are on point. The visuals seemed a little rough at some point but it was not bad in fact I like it.
The only flaw in this manga is that it is too short. I wanted to see more silly and funny things of these characters. The other thing is that there was not much part of Isseki’s mother as there are many situations where she could have been making it a little longer.
The manga is also available in West through Seven Seas as paperback and also on digital platform. The book is also available in English, translated by Nova Skipper.
My Father is a Unicorn is a fascinating manga which will make you laugh letting you know the hardships of a step-father especially if he is a unicorn. Although you might end being disappointed by the fact that there is no other volume, you will still enjoy the book to the fullest.\
