Winners Announced for 2024 Eisner Comic Industry Awards

Comic-Con International has unveiled the victors of this year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. A highlight of the event was Maki Fujiwara’s My Picture Diary, translated by Ryan Holmberg, which earned the title for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia.

Top Contenders and Honorees

This category featured fierce competition, showcasing a variety of exceptional works:

  • #DRCL midnight children by Shin’ichi Sakamoto, inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, translated by Caleb Cook
  • Goodbye, Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto, translated by Amanda Haley
  • River’s Edge by Kyoko Okazaki, translated by Alexa Frank
  • The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren, translated by Ajani Oloye

Additional Awards and Recognitions

Sana Takeda received the Best Painter/Multimedia Artist (Interior Art) award for her work on The Night Eaters: Her Little Reapers and Monstress.

Mokumokuren’s The Summer Hikaru Died, translated by Ajani Oloye, was a finalist for Best Writer/Artist. However, Daniel Warren Johnson’s Transformers clinched the award. Johnson’s Transformers also secured the Best Continuing Series title.

Another notable mention was Blood Blade’s Oma Sei, which was in the running for the Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award, but the accolade went to Oliver Bly’s The Mushroom Knight.

Best Adaptation from Another Medium

Both Shin’ichi Sakamoto’s #DRCL midnight children and Gou Tanabe’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s story and translated by Zack Davisson, were nominated for Best Adaptation from Another Medium. Richard Adams, James Sturm, and Joe Sutphin’s Watership Down ultimately won the category.

Other Distinguished Awards

Teki Yatsuda’s The Yakuza’s Bias, translated by Max Greenway, was a contender for Best Humor Publication. The award went to It’s Jeff: The Jeff-Verse #1 by Kelly Thompson and Gurihiru.

The Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun First Stall Box Set, designed by Wendy Chan, was a nominee for Best Publication Design. However, the boxed set of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, designed by Mike Kennedy (Magnetic), won the award.

Graphic Album—Reprint and Teen Publications

Ichigo Takano’s Orange Complete Series Box Set, translated by Amber Tamosaitis, was nominated for Best Graphic Album—Reprint. The award was shared by Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons by Kelly Sue DeConnick, Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott, and Ed Piskor’s Hip Hop Family Tree: The Omnibus.

Mamoru Aoi’s My Girlfriend’s Child, translated by Hana Allen, was in the running for Best Publication for Teens. Ryan North and Erica Henderson’s Danger and Other Unknown Risks ultimately took home the award in this category.

Artistic Accomplishments

Inaki Miranda received a nomination for Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team for his work on Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons. However, the award was won by Jillian Tamaki for Roaming. Additionally, Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons was also nominated for Best Limited Series, but Caroline Cash’s PeePee PooPoo secured the win in that category.

Last year’s Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award went to Hayao Miyazaki’s Shuna’s Journey, translated by Alex Dudok de Wit. Another significant win was for The LGBTQ+ Comics Studies Reader: Critical Openings, Future Directions, which includes insightful chapters such as “XX, XY, and XXY: Genderqueer Bodies in Hagio Moto’s Science Fiction Manga” by Keiko Miyajima and “Gay Fanzines as Contact Zones: Dokkun’s Adventures with ‘Bara’ Manga in between Japan and France” by Edmond (Edo) Ernest Dit Alban.
