All the feel-good emotions you could ever want are in this film. It has the feel of a fairy tale but is grounded in reality (at least when it comes to the emotions of the characters).
The story revolves around a young woman’s encounter with a forest spirit. Though their rendezvous was meant to be brief, they find themselves developing a strong emotional attachment. Problem is, if she so much as touches the ghost, he disappears forever.
Such a basic idea that ends up adding so much depth; no cute head pats, but a genuine bond nonetheless.
5. Lovely Complex
Short kings, with the exception of Meliodas, are not celebrated nearly enough. And tall women always seem to be the punchline. But worry not, for Lovely Complicated is here to alter that. The odd romance between the diminutive Atsushi Ootani as well as the towering beauty Koizumi Risa is the focus of this work.
This is a sweet tale, and the authors did a great job capturing their chemistry. The show’s message, though, is what I like about it the best. Sure, plenty of shows preach self-love.
Lovely Complex, on the other hand, employs a more “show don’t tell” approach, softening the blow a bit.
6. His and Her Circumstances
This anime is like Oresuki if it were improved upon a little bit… alright, a lot. This is so because it shows that even the most flawless kid may be hiding some dark secrets, but that they may still find love even as they stay loyal to who they really are.
Unfortunately, there is no bench-Kun. However, the dynamic and entertaining chemistry between the leads more than makes up for this. In fact, the first few episodes have a distinctly “Mean Girls” vibe to them. In a sense, the show does just cease without any warning. That said, you should check out the adapted part anyhow.
7. Golden Time
The show’s tone was completely odd at the beginning, and it took me a while to adjust.
In the opening scene, a man wanders aimlessly through the city, runs into another man who is similarly disoriented, and is then smacked in the head with a bouquet of flowers by a mysterious female stranger, setting off a wild chase worthy of a Looney Tunes cartoon.
After that, you should have known the show was going to be completely absurd. On the other hand, I can’t deny that the show’s depiction of romantic love is compelling.
Likewise, the characters feel complete. And the majority of events occur by chance. It goes to show that you shouldn’t evaluate a book by its cover.
8. Tamako Love Story
She is simply your typical girl who enjoys living in the present, doesn’t worry too much about the future because she has a great position in her family’s restaurant, and is mostly focused on doing well in her upcoming baton performance.
9. My Little Monster
Despite what you may have heard, this show is not about Lady Gaga’s rabid followers. I can relate; I felt the same way. But my little monster is great.
Pairing them up is like taking a gamble, because both of them truly don’t know how to handle social situations, yet they’re still going out for separate reasons. In this unorthodox couple, Shizuku, the female lead, is a chill kuudere who doesn’t care about much of anything.
There’s also Haru, a quasi-delinquent who’s bursting with ardor and, for some reason, keeps a rooster. It’s refreshingly original, charmingly odd, and morally sound.
10. Ao Haru Ride
You may have decided that you’re unattractive in one aspect, and so you’ve made a complete about-face, leaving your friends and family confused about how they should feel about you.
That’s the story’s overarching message, as the protagonist of Ao Haru Ride transforms from a “girly-girl” to one of the lads after failing to reveal her feelings to the boy she liked in middle school.
11. Clannad
One of the best-known tear-jerkers is Clannad. The world-building is superb, the characterization is rich and complex, and the writing is so convincing that you believe you are watching real people’s lives unfold on the page.
This is due to the fact that not only is the show’s focus more intense, but so are the characters’ relationships. In addition, it’s neither as dark as Kuzu no Honkai nor as light as a pure comedy. The twists and turns really work your ‘love muscle.’
The music alone is guaranteed to bring tears to the eyes of at least the majority of you viewing this.
12. Toradora!
Toradora’s greatest strength is the grace with which it juggles both serious and comedic elements. Taiga’s adorable moments come when she’s not slashing people with her sword or acting like a diva when hanging out with Ryuuji and Inko.
A lot of the speeches, themes, and acts she gets are quite serious. I just thought it would be funny to bring up her habit of assaulting people with a sword. However, this exact action had me on the edge of my seat later on.
In sum, it offers a taste of just about everything. The second half of the show is fantastic, and it’s worth sticking through the dull beginning.
13. Kimi no Na wa.
The movie was so massive it was ridiculous. Rapidly became popular among anime fans and beyond.
Yes, there are supernatural undertones to the story. The quest for one’s soul mate, the pursuit of the red thread of destiny, and the occasional Freaky Friday-style body swap are all very genuine human experiences.
The film’s visual style is also quite well done. Everything is effortless and transparent. The combination with an evocative score provides for a thrilling evening at the theatre.
14. Nana
There’s a lot going on in this show: friendship, ambition, rivalry, and of course, music. But love is a universal theme, whether it’s between friends or lovers. Let me preface this by saying that there are a few ships in this show that will make you want to rip your hair out. You’ll find some of them heartbreaking, while others are the finest example of what it means to strive for anything.
The highs and lows of relationships are shown in such detail that you feel like a fly on the wall while watching the show. The anime and manga are still ongoing and haven’t concluded yet despite the show’s age.
15. Ouran High School Host Club
There is a host club at Ouran High School. However, what exactly is a “host club”?
It’s where well-heeled young men go to try their luck with the ladies and score that coveted piece of paper. Is there a female protagonist among these ladies? No, not at all, actually. See, somebody who has nothing to do with the hosting club gets into debt and has to pass themselves off as a boy to get out of it.
Turns out she has more Chadian blood in her than any of the others, making her the crowd favourite among the gals. Nonetheless, “off stage,” her charisma is just as formidable, and she quickly becomes a hit with the guys. This oddity is actually rather amusing.
16. ReLife
We take a person in his twenties who is failing at life (like the rest of us) and give him a medication that makes him an adolescent again. Because of this, he must go back to high school and rediscover the causes of adolescent worry.
Is it possible that he might find love on his travels? I’m not going to pass judgment on whether or not you find that odd considering his actual age. One thing I will say is that this show was the simplest to binge-watch ever.
17. The Anthem of the Heart
It’s amusing to ignore the real world in favor of your own personal fairy tale (the literary type, not the anime).
Our main character had to discover this the hard way when her naivete caused a secret to leak out and cause harm to those closest to her. A “curse,” or more accurately a seal, has been placed over her mouth, rendering her permanently mute.
The school, however, pulls a “calling on someone who didn’t raise their hand” and selects her for a role in the musical even though she didn’t volunteer. She meets Mr. Rockstar Sakagami there, and the rest is…a spoiler.
Final Thoughts
For many, anime is the most effective method of escape. While Goku is busy learning his next rainbow transformation, it’s hard to worry about your mounting student loans.
