Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun Episode 1: Review

Hanako is the story of seven wonders in the schools of Japan where the third stall of the female bathroom is haunted by the ghost of the girl who fulfills your wishes when you knock and say her name. Yashiro, who is the main character of the series have heard the same story and so she tries the same thing. However, the twist in the series is that the ghost is not the girl but a boy and so the shenanigans begin.

The show seemed extremely interesting to me when I came to know about it and saw the trailer. I found it quite funny and amusing and apart of the story the character design also got my attention. But most of all the most attractive part of the anime is the animation. Studio Lerche has done a great job in adapting the manga in the most beautiful way possible. Everything about the animation is gorgeous including the colors, the style and the designs. As far as the show goes, it is also good. It’s a sweet and funny show that mainly focused on the relationship of Yahiro and Hanako. I won’t say that it was great but it was really good.

When Hanako is called by Yashiro, he asks her what her wish is and she responds by telling him that she wants her crush, Minamoto to be attracted to her. The remaining episode was about them trying various techniques to make her wish come true and make Minamoto love her. Hanako tells her to use her skills to make that happen like make food for him, write a note to him along with the vegetables that she grew or just run into him, although that doesn’t include as her skill. She accidentally does that to some other guy and he slips down the staircase.

Hanako is an interesting character but don’t think the same about Yashiro yet. Yashiro says that she like Minomoto but I didn’t like the way she explaimned it to Hanako when he asked her some questions. According to her she had expressed her feelings to the person she loves and she tries to be someone she is not. She tries to be more feminine as her crush is more into feminine girls which means girls who knows cooking, sewing and some other skills that supposed to be known by typical girls. The time she expressed her feeling to him, he didn’t know who she was and he even made fun of her legs. So basically he is a jerk. But, she is still in love with this guy who doesn’t even care about her feelings. She doesn’t even have no idea what her crush’s first name is. She is blindly obsessed with him and will do anything to get his attraction. She even devour the mermaid’s scale without letting Hanako finish the explanation.

The mermaid scale turned Yashiro into a fish as it was a curse and she made her mermaid’s maid. The mermaid arrived to get her but Hanako saved her and the mermaid left. The scene was thrilling but sadly it was very short. After the departure of the mermaid Hanako questions Yashiro about the wish that she has to use to become human again. But, there is a catch, she has to pay the price through her body which means she just has to assist him. What more sweet is that he also devour the mermaid’s scale to experience the same curse, making their bond stronger. In a way he also fulfilled her other wish by responding to her feelings.

Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun Episode 1: Review

I can’t guess how story will progress from here. But, it’s a cute show and fun to watch. The episode wasn’t that great but it was enjoyable and I am willing to watch it in the future.
