Yuki is stuck with some eccentric people in Student Council as the president of the student body. While reading the manga I wasn’t really interested reading about Student Council members but the anime adaptation of these characters is really intriguing. Although I still do not like Kakeru. But we have to wait and see if he changes that impression. Yuki has to struggle a lot as he is not experienced in leading a group especially a bunch of chaotic weirdos. But I’m happy he is trying since he vowed to himself that he will not runaway anymore.
Two new characters are introduced who are members of the Student Council and have joined “School Defense Force” as secretaries. They both seem to be outrageous in their own way with Kimi deliberately creating disturbance in prince Yuki Club just for fun and Nao is the personification of small dog who barks rather than bite. It’s been a while since I read the manga but I didn’t really care of these two back then but I actually enjoyed watching them in anime so I am looking forward to see more of them.
The introspective of Yuki moves forward along with some character development. Although we have seen a lot development in his character and he has changed a lot but it’s not unusual for him or anyone to get stuck with the habits of self-criticism. So, there is nothing wrong if he takes some steps backwards as it is not easy to get over those habits. He still faces his own inner chaos that he tries to resolve as he has been a victim of abuse throughout his childhood so it’s natural to think negative sometimes. Yuki has the habit of thinking low of himself. He keeps comparing himself with others. One of these people that he compares himself with is Kyo. He keeps pointing out his own lacking while comparing them with the qualities of others. He mentioned it himself that he is the biggest villain in his own life.
Kakeru is a little annoying. Although he seems like a younger version of Ayame but compared to Ayame Kakeru is quite immature and very lazy. I’m sure his character will develop as he seems one of the most significant character when it comes to someone close to Yuki. Having read the manga already, there is probably something related to his past that made me furious but even if I try to ignore that and give him a chance, he doesn’t seem to do anything to change that impression with his immaturity. The way he kicked the plant that Yuki was holding, was rude. His assumptions made Yuki furious and Yuki’s anger is justified as it made him think that he is not as happy as Kyo despite of having no clue about anything related to him. Although Kakeru has brought some noticeable change in Yuki and not in a negative way.
When it come to his interaction with Yuki, I never liked him and those interactions were the first reason I couldn’t stand him but his interaction and the way he talks to him is something different for Yuki as he challenges Yuki’s point of views in a way that no one ever did before. Even if that annoys Yuki, it also makes him act differently and openly. It’s a major character development. They both seems to get closer to each other by opening up to each other and it’s something Yuki never does easily. It’s the first time Yuki openly shouted at someone telling about his own insecurity that he doesn’t like to be compared with others. Kakeru also ended up being honest about being insensitive as he is unable to see things from other’s perspective.
Although their argument started with misunderstanding, it was the first time Yuki open about his feeling to someone other than Tohru. The way he argued and fought with Kakeru is very different from how he fight with Kyo. In case of Kyo, they keep insulting each other pointlessly, without reaching to any conclusion. While in case of Kakeru they both came to a self-realization and while understanding each other in the end and then eventually got closer to each other. Their argument was based on jealousy which is the case in Kyo as well and I think if with some mutual understanding Kyo and Yuki can also be open about each other feelings if keep their ego aside.
The episode was quite hilarious in general like Kimi irritating the Yuki Fan Club. And the whole scenario with Kakeru and Yuki. We see many characters hitting each other in episode like Kyo being beaten up by uotoni, Kakeru hitting Naohito and Kimi hitting Kakeru. The scene where they were assigning colors made me laugh out loud which went beyond control when Kakeru hypocritically questioned about why they were even doing it. It was pretty hilarious
Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the new opening in this episode as well. But, I guess it’s because of the lockdown situation, that they probably couldn’t make the new opening for the second half. We can’t do to anything about it. But there was a change in the opening and we saw Kureno in the opening, it’s probably because they wanted to introduce him in the opening at least once. But still hope for a new opening because Fruits Basket never disappoint its fans regarding opening and ending themes.
