Fruits Basket Season 2 Episode 12: Review

I was never in the favor of Hatori x Mayu ship. Probably it is because the couples with opposite personalities are more attractive than those with similar ones. The other reason that I do not like this ship is probably because I am Hatori x Kana shipper and like their chemistry better. Although Mayu is not bad as a character, I do not like to imagine her with someone like Hatori. But it’s good that they are many fans who like this ship. For me, a serious man like Hatoruishould be with joyful and lively girl like Kana. I probably would also have wanted him to end up with Tohru if there wasn’t such a big age gap.

Although when it comes to Mayu I’m not a big fan or a fonder but I genuinely felt sad for her when Shigure asked her out just because he was bored and she was feeling lonely. The whole scenario was quite sad as Shigure was pitiful towards her for having crush on best friend’s boyfriend and at the same time he was also enjoying that. They didn’t seem to have a serious relationship and none of them really liked each other in a romantic way particularly Shigure who seemed a little indifferent towards her.

Fruits Basket Season 2 Episode 12: Review

I like Mayu’s loyalty towards Kana. Despite of having serious crush on Hatori, she genuinely wanted and wished for their happiness together. So it was definitely heart breaking for her to see her best friend acting like she has lost it. It was hard to see Kana being so depressed and dejected. She cared so much about Hatori that even in a condition like that she more concern about Hatori’s eyes and the fact that she couldn’t save him. She was the only shining light in his dark life and it was heart wrenching to see her saying so casually that she and Hatori would not get along, after losing her memories. And probably this is another reason why do not like Hatori x Mayu, that she is the best friend of Kana who was once madly and deeply in love with Hatori. Although it’s not a betrayal when Kana is married now and suggested that she and Hatori would look good together, I am still not in favor of this ship.

It was interesting to see the how an outsider like Mayu has views on a situation like this. She knows a lot more than a usual outsider as she already knows about hypnotism for suppressing memory and she also saw Kana being hurt while telling her about not being able to protect him. She surely knows that something is odd in the family but I like that she didn’t dig deeper to know everything. She already knows so much and getting more information would only put her into trouble so it’s better to keep distance. It’s quite interesting to see a character like her.

Shigure is always ready to stir things up. Although whatever he does, there is always some something in it for him, considering his manipulative behavior, but in this I would like to consider this as an of kindness for his friend. As we have seen it in the first season as well that no matter how selfish and manipulative he is, there is always a soft spot in his heart for Hatori. Their friendship is truly great as Hatori seems to be the only person that Shigure can openly talk to and seems to be considerate towards him. And we can say the same for Hatori as no matter how much manipulative and complicated person he is Hatori has been his friend for years.

I feel sad for Hatori as he is always taking care for Akito. Health seems to be just an excuse hatori seems to be the zodiac that Akito wants always beside him. I truly hated that maid for trying to make him feel guilty for not being with Akito. When they see that child crying loudly, it was quite an ironic to hear that comment coming out from the maid as Akito is exactly, like that child who throws tantrums on little things. It was really sad to see Hatori saying that happiness is not for him, when he is the person who is dealing with a man child, like a parent all the time.

Fruits Basket Season 2 Episode 12: Review

Talking about the child crying, which was the symbolism for letting out the feelings that keeps accumulating inside our hearts making us suffer more. There is nothing wrong in crying out loud sometimes even for the adults as it is quite necessary to let out all those feelings that bottling up inside. Hatori realized when he saw Mayu crying like a child as she was feeling sad for him when he said that happiness is not for him. It made Hatori felt good as she was crying for his sake.

The story around Hatori is really sad. His backstory with Kana is also very tragic. After having suffered a lot in the past, it’s heartbreaking to see him saying that he doesn’t deserve happiness. Although he seems fine everything happening around him and remains expressionless all the time, but deep down inside he wants to be happy and free like other members.

It seems like that it has been implied that one day they will be together. Although I am happy for Hatori but this ship does not work for me. But it’s just my view point as many people like them together. It was quite a different episode especially compared to the last episode which was about the end of Kyo and Kagura’s relationship. This episode was about the beginning of a new relationship, although Shigure mentioned that it will take some time from Hatori’s side. It was rather a hopeful episode although it made us cry a few points. I was hoping for a new opening but I guess it will be released with a new arc. Let’s hope we get to see that next week.
