Appearance
Fair-skinned Zenitsu has slanted, scared-looking eyes that gradually transition from a light brown to a golden hue. His short, yellow hair falls in uneven bangs in front of his face. It shortens squarely at the ends, where it fades to a darker orange. Zenitsu had black hair before becoming a Demon Slayer, but it turned yellow after lightning struck him during his training.
His limbs shrank slightly during the battle on Natagumo Mountain from Demonic venom, but Shinobu Kocho’s treatment helped them grow back to normal size. His attire consists of the traditional Demon Slayer garb: a dark brown gakuran jacket, a white belt at the waist, and a pair of extending hakama.
On top of this, he wears his characteristic white-triangle patterned, yellow and orange gradient haori. Zenitsu also wears white-laced shoes and tabi socks with the same pattern as his haori that are fastened in front with three white bows.
Personality
Zenitsu is a coward who always says his work as a Demon Slayer means he doesn’t have long to live. Despite his physical prowess, he suffers from poor self-esteem to the point where he believes he is completely useless, as evidenced by the time he convinced himself that Shoichi had killed a Demon instead of him, even though Shoichi was just a kid with no special powers.
Zenitsu is always terrified, always crying and always trying to run away at the sight of danger, claiming he wants to live a simple, regular life rather than a life as a Demon Slayer, in which he believes he is useless all the time.
Despite his flaws, Zenitsu strives to meet the standards others have set for him and gives 110% whenever he’s called upon. His inner focus and purpose in avenging his slain master, Jigoro Kuwajima, usually assist to wash away his cowardice and second thoughts when he’s in a pinch, and he has enormous respect and regard for his fellow soldiers and for Jigoro Kuwajima.
As the story progresses, Zenitsu is also revealed to be somewhat of a want tobe womanizer, with a penchant for hitting on girls he finds attractive and asking them to marry him, to to their chagrin. This womanizing inclination is proven to overpower his normally submissive disposition, especially when he thinks his friends are “flirting” with gorgeous girls. During these episodes, he also exhibits physical aggression, lashing out at them.
Powers and Abilities
Zenitsu’s hearing was heightened, allowing him to pick up sounds that others might miss. He can distinguish between the sounds of a human and a demon on the move, a difference that is imperceptible to the human ear. Because to his enhanced hearing, he is more alert to any threats.
With the Thunder Breathing technique, Zenitsu is one of the series’ quickest characters. As a result, Zenitsu is a formidable adversary thanks to his ability to fight while unconscious. Zenitsu’s dangerousness and speed increase as he continues to train and conquer his anxieties. Because of his lightning-fast speed, he can easily avoid harm from even the Higher Moons.
When Zenitsu is sufficiently alarmed, he will pass out rather than fight while fully conscious. While he’s out cold, he fights at the top of his game based on instinct alone, unleashing his full ability with Thunder Breathing without any awareness of it or fear holding him back. As time goes on, Zenitsu gets more capable and less frequently needs to rely on this remarkable skill.
Zenitsu’s Backstory
Zenitsu’s story in Demon Slayer begins with him taking on a debt for the sake of the woman he loves. She abandons Zenitsu with the debt and no girl when she runs off with another man. Jigoro Kuwajima later kidnaps Zenitsu. Zenitsu is taken in by Jigoro, a former Thunder Hashira, who instructs him in the art of Thunder Breathing. Zenitsu affectionately refers to Jigoro as “Gramps” because their relationship grows to that of a grandfather and grandson.
Another student, Kaigaku, frequently corrected Zenitsu for calling Jigoro “Gramps” and for his other casual mannerisms. Even more ominously, Kaigaku appears to harbor resentment toward Zenitsu, constantly accusing him of being a crybaby and the like. Zenitsu was once struck by lightning while hiding in a tree from Jigoro, whom he believed would train him to death. Zenitsu made it through, but his once-black hair is now the series’ signature yellow.
This completes the picture of Kaigaku and Zenitsu as literary foils, contrasting characters in every way. Zenitsu shares Kaigaku’s dislike for him, but unlike Kaigaku, he does not disrespect his classmate. After passing Final Selection and obtaining his Kasugai Sparrow, Zenitsu’s story begins to unfold on Demon Slayer.
Later, he runs into Tanjiro Kamado and discovers that he can hear a drumbeat even though neither Kamado nor the kids around him can. When he defended Nezuko’s box from Inosuke Hashibira, Zenitsu showed courage and good intentions.
At the end of the series, Zenitsu learns that Kokushibo is responsible for Kaigaku’s transformation into a Demon and reveals that the only technique Kaigaku is unable to perform is the one he himself is capable of. Zenitsu redeems his late master with a brand new, unheard-of Thunder Breathing technique that he uses to kill Kaigaku at the end of their battle.
Final Thoughts
Zenitsu may have a reputation as a coward, yet he can hold his own against any of the other Demon Slayers. In addition, he’s one of only two non-Hashira characters shown to develop his own unique Shape for his Breathing Style. Especially in his foiling of Kaigaku, Zenitsu’s past is crucial to understanding who he is as a person.
The series concludes magnificently, with the characters’ storylines coming together and finding satisfying conclusions. Hope you liked reading our article.
