Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次) is Captain Byakuya Kuchiki’s second in command and the spouse of Rukia Kuchiki. Initially, he served as the 11th Division’s 6th Seat under Kenpachi Zaraki. He makes it his mission in life to destroy Ichigo Kurosaki, the show’s protagonist. But switches sides midway through the Soul Society arc in order to rescue Rukia Kuchiki.

Renji Abarai’s appearance
Renji has long crimson hair, and brown eyes, and wears his hair in a high ponytail. As a kid, Renji’s hairline was unusually low. He fashioned a widow’s peak out of it later. He has been covered with tribal tattoos ever since his days as a young student at the academy; they now cover his entire back, much of his chest, his arms, his legs, and even a sizable section of his forehead.

History of Renji Abarai
Like many other kids, Renji spent his formative years in the 78th District of Rukongai, Inuzuri. With no known relatives in Soul Society, they banded together to find one other’s families. After stealing a water jug, Renji and his friends were once chased by an adult with a kama.
Rukia Kuchiki tripped the adult and urged Renji’s gang to follow her so that they wouldn’t lose the water. They had formed a close-knit family unit by the time Rukia joined them. All of them had nothing but contempt for the people of Inuzuri.
Spiritual strength is what Rukia possesses, and this fact infuriates Renji. Ten years after Rukia’s initial arrival with their group, and long after their other friends had died, Renji agreed to Rukia’s proposal that they become Shinigami. Due to their high levels of spiritual strength, they were quickly accepted into Shin’s Academy, but they had to work hard to gain the respect of those from noble families.
Instead of following Rukia’s advice, Renji spent the night in a tree before the Academy’s formal welcome ceremony for new students. The next morning, he fell from the tree and landed on a headstone where a worried Izuru Kira was saying her prayers. Because of their high test results, Hinamori siblings Renji, Izuru, and Momo were accepted into the elite class.
Power and Abilities of Renji
Renji is adept in many various swordsmanship methods. He was taught by Ikkaku Madarame, the 3rd Seat of the 11th Division before he was assigned to his division. Prior to being given the rank of lieutenant, his fighting prowess allowed him to compete against Ikkaku’s Shikai as a 6th Seat Officer in the 11th Division.
Only a select few lieutenants have attained Bankai, making Renji one of the few who can go head-to-head with captain-level fighters. Renji’s strength comes from the unique manner his Zanpakut—a whip and a sword—operates in combat.
This makes Renji a versatile fighter, and the fact that he knows how to put it to good use is a testament to his skill. Renji has utilized Zabimaru in a multitude of ways, claiming that it is an extension of his body much like his limbs and legs are.
He can use the extension ability of his assault to attack an opponent from behind or from the left, right, or all of these directions without revealing his assault’s version until it’s too late. He is quite talented at encircling opponents from numerous angles while using his extension powers to suffocate them, and he can then retract Zabimaru to smash opponents.
Zabimaru
Everybody better get out of Renji’s way, for he is an expert swordsman and fighter. Everything he has to offer is stored in his Zanpakuto blade.
Renji uses the Zabimaru as he fights for the Gotei 13 with it. With the “Yelp” command, Renji’s sword swings farther and he can even whip death with it. Due to its unconventional design and impressive skills, the Zabimaru is often considered to be one of the most challenging swords to learn. This katana is black overall with a red handle and sheath and a bronze guard with sharp edges.
Renji Bankai
Renji begins his training under the tutelage of Squad Zero’s leader, Ichibe Hyosube. Hyosung reveals that Renji’s Bankai is actually Soo Zabimaru. By convincing Zabimaru of his might, Renji gains access to it, and he uses it for the first time in his struggle with the Quincy Mask de Masculin.
Because of this, the other Zabimaru forms behave very differently from Zabimaru. The shorter blade of this gauntlet, which is attached to a snake’s head, protects Renji’s right hand.

After Renji’s defeat, he gave Ichigo Rukia’s rescue before stopping the execution. They quickly started chatting as allies. They became close quickly, although they still fought.
Due to their similar battle tactics, the pair have a humorous rivalry that typically escalates. Both are powerful, prepared to take risks, and care about safeguarding the helpless. Ichigo and Renji work well together but have a funny rivalry. Renji wants to be as powerful as Ichigo, therefore their rivalry is not about winning a rematch.
