The Reprise of the Spear Hero Volumes 1&2: Review

One Peace Books have been releasing light novel The Rising of the Shield Hero to the West that are becoming popular among the manga readers since 2015. The publisher has also brought a spin-off series The Reprise of the Spear Hero. In this article I will be discussing about the manga adaptation of spin off series The Reprise of the Spear Hero.

The series starts with Motoyasu, the spear hero, who travels back in the time when all four heroes were summoned for the first time. Despite of retaining his stats and capabilities, Motoyasu has to start over in this world.

But this is his chance to make things right for the shield hero Naofumi and protect him from all the sufferings that he had to endure, the first time they were summoned. Motoyasu, use all methods he could to save Shield Hero from all those hardships. Soon Motoyasu gets to know that he has to be ready to put his own life at risk in order to protect his friends as the demise of any of the friend would sent back again and will have to start over again and it will keep happening till the time all his friends are out of danger.

This time travel is also good for Motoyasu in a way that this time around he can keep Filolial, Filo for himself. Originally Filo was claimed by Naofumi and Motoyasu was attracted to her. So this is his opportunity to get her egg and bring her up. While searching for Filo, he ends up having many Filolial and our imbecile hero loves all them.

The Reprise of the Spear Hero Volumes 1&2: Review

Those who are familiar with the Rising of the Shield hero series or have read its light novel, know Motoyasu who started off as a villain but soon become an ally of Naofumi and a trustworthy friend. In this spin-off series he is the protagonist and can be seen as attractive character or an annoying one as the fans have already seen him in the original series. He has stubborn personality which can be difficult to see in the hero of a series.

The first volume of The Reprise of the Spear Hero manga adaptation does not prolong the explanation making it longer and is rather precise when it comes to storytelling. The first two volumes of the manga ha adapted a lot from the original

Having said that the first two Volumes of this series has a lot of action-packed moments which is involved in both Motoyasu standing up for Naofumi and fighting with them or attempting to increase his Filolial’s levels. Neet (Mayo Chiki!) has illustrated the manga series and has done a good job in portraying the characters in both funny and serious scenes, keeping balance between both moods.

The fans of the original series might notice some lacking in the character design but Neet has made all heroes look great. They all look cute which is suitable in the manga with Motoyasuas a protagonist but at the same time the seriousness of true heroes does not seem to be lacking. There are many thigs happening in the manga right from the start but it’s not difficult to read.

One thing that only anime fans would face while reading it is that they would find many spoilers from the light novels right from the first volume of the manga that haven’t been shown in the anime so far. But the good thing is that it can be skipped as all spoilers are included in Summer of The Rising of the Shield Hero’ section. So it can be convenient for those who don’t want to be spoiled while reading about the journey of the Motoyasu in this spin-off

All in all the manga adaptation of The Reprise of the Spear Hero is a fun read for the fans of Rising of the Shield Hero. It does not have as many spoilers as the original light novel and those who are on the current chapters of The Rising of The Shield Hero will definitely enjoy it.
